Expert Glaziers

Established over 40 years ago, we are supported by a team of skilled glazing specialists

Without a doubt, double glazed windows are a fantastic investment. They are renowned for their durability and the wide range of benefits that they provide property owners with.

However, after some time has passed, or if the initial installation was faulty, your UPVC double glazed window may need some attention.

But don’t worry, you don’t always have to fork out on a brand new replacement window.

At Abbey Glass, we provide a specialist double glazing repair service, which addresses some of the most common faults that arise within UPVC double glazed windows.

So, how do you know when your window needs repairing, and how does double glazing repair work?

Keep reading to find our full guide to UPVC double glazing repairs.

Under what circumstances can you repair UPVC Double Glazed windows?

What are the most common flaws in double glazed windows?

The areas of double glazed windows that most commonly incur faults are:

The Hinges, Locking Mechanisms, Handles, Gaskets and Sealing. So, if you think your existing frame or unit may be faulty, these are the areas that you should check.

Below, we have outlined the most common issues with double glazed windows in more detail. This will help you to understand what the problem is, and whether a repair or replacement would be the best solution.

Condensation

In faulty double glazing, condensation can build up in between the two panes. This is visible as droplets of moisture, or mist spreading in the gap in the centre of the two panes of glass.

If condensation occurs on your windows in the winter, on the surface of your window that is inside the house, that means your window is working correctly.

But, condensation in between the two panes tells you that there is a fault with the unit, most commonly caused by a break in the double glazing seal.

This is not an error caused by the glass itself. So, this means you’ll only need to repair the sealed units, not replace the entire window.

Water leaks

For the majority of the time, this is another problem that is caused by ineffective sealing. If it is an issue with the sealing, then this will be the only area that needs replacing. However, if the water is leaking through another area of the window, then a replacement may be required.

So, if you see that water is leaking through the window into the inside of your property, you will need to book an assessment with a window repair specialist.

Damage to the frame itself

Sometimes, if it is an old unit, the UPVC window frame can deteriorate over time.

This can include faulty hinges, or issues with the handles or locking mechanisms.

If any of these occur, the issue can be fixed with a quick repair service. A UPVC window specialist can replace the handles, hinges or locks, ensuring that your window is restored to full functionality.

Cracking or Broken Glass

It’s very rare for modern double glazed windows to break, because the glass is extremely strong and weather resistant.

But, if you do see cracking or breaks in your window glass, you will need to replace the glass.

However, you may not need to replace the entire window. Try to identify whether the break has occurred on only one side of the window. Thanks to the gap in between the two panes, this is far more common than both panes being damaged.

If this is the case, then it’s likely that the break has only affected one of the window panes. As a result, you’ll only need to replace one of the window panes.

To summarise, the question of whether a repair or replacement would be best for you depends on the extent and type of the issue.

If your window is a very old unit, and issues like these keep cropping up, then we would recommend that you invest in a replacement window.

Furthermore , it is possible to improve old glazing in existing frames with new energy efficient Double Glazed Units to improve Insulation and save energy.

They fixed the problem, what is more despite being out of guarantee - they did this free of charge. I wish all companies were like Abbey Glass, they are a credit to Sheffield.

Excellent service from the first phone call to the quote and then the fitting and all done within 2 weeks - I would wholeheartedly recommend them - for window repairs, saved money compared to other companies that wanted to replace whole windows. The team that come out - Alan, Mick and Mikey were brilliant!! - only wish we had booked them years before. We will only think of Abbey Glass in future for such jobs. Thanks Updated January 2026 - had a problem with window drainage and Alan and Mick came within a week and sorted the problem out - free of charge - pleased with the service. Will definitely use this company again.
